How PoNS® Brings Physical Therapy to the Next Level

PoNS, the Portable Neuromodulation Stimulator, is an orally-applied therapy proven to increase walking ability for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). PoNS must be used in conjunction with physical therapy (PT). Together, PoNS and PT are referred to as PoNS Therapy®.

Boost PT with PoNS and Get Back In Step With Life.

The Importance of PT

PT can help people with MS improve their ability to walk and overall quality of life.1 You and your physical therapist can create a personalized improvement plan together. Depending on your situation, there are different kinds of exercises your physical therapist may recommend.
Gait Training
Coordination Exercises
Strength Training
Stretching and Flexibility
Aerobic Exercises
Assistive Devices

Each of these exercises can help you feel steadier on your feet. But as you progress, you may want to elevate your routine. That’s where PoNS comes in.

Get Real Results—Boost PT With PoNS

PoNS is a wearable, easy-to-use, neuromodulation device designed to boost the established benefits of PT.

Here’s how PoNS works:

  1. PoNS includes a wearable controller that is placed on the neck and a mouthpiece that rests on the tongue.

  2. When the PoNS is on, the electrodes on the mouthpiece send mild electrical impulses through the tongue. This stimulates two cranial nerves. This process is called translingual neurostimulation.

  3. This process creates a flow of neural impulses that are delivered directly into the brainstem and cerebellum—the body’s movement control center.

  4. These impulses travel throughout the brain and activate neurons and structures involved in human function.

  5. Over 14 weeks of consistent PoNS Therapy, the PoNS device initiates lasting neuroplastic changes in the brain that impact your ability to walk.

PoNS+Physical Therapy=PoNS Therapy

PoNS Therapy is a comprehensive, one-on-one, 14-week PT program completed under the supervision of a trained physical rehabilitation specialist, also known as a PoNS Trainer.

In a study that compared PoNS to placebo, people who used PoNS improved their walking ability more significantly than those who did not.2

Individual results and experiences may vary. Talk to your doctor to see if PoNS is right for you.

While PT is important to improve your walking ability, alone it does not bring about the neuroplastic benefits that PoNS provides.

If you feel like your PT journey needs to be taken to the next level, PoNS will get you there.

IMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

No serious adverse events related to the PoNS device were reported in the MS RCTs or in use in clinical rehabilitation settings to treat balance and gait disorders.

Some individuals have reported headaches, fatigue, and excess salivation. Excess salivation during training sessions often occurs but generally improves as patients get used to wearing the mouthpiece.

Indication
The PoNS® device is indicated for use as a short term treatment of gait deficit due to mild to moderate symptoms from multiple sclerosis and is to be used as an adjunct to a supervised therapeutic exercise program for adults 22 years of age and over by prescription only.

Contraindications
The PoNS® device delivers electrical stimulation directly to the surface of the tongue. Precautions for use are similar to those for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).

Electrical stimulation should not be used:

  • If there is an active or suspected malignant tumor
  • In areas of recent bleeding or open wounds
  • In areas that lack normal sensation

The PoNS® has not been tested on, and thus should not be used by individuals who are pregnant. Do not use the PoNS® if you are sensitive to nickel, gold or copper.

Use with caution
Electrical stimulation should only be used after seeking professional medical advice, and with caution in patients with any of the following:

  • Implanted electronic devices, including:
    • Cardiac pacemakers
    • Cardioverter defibrillators
    • Deep Brain Stimulators
    • Vagal Nerve Stimulators
    • Sacral nerve stimulators
    • Cochlear Implants
  • Metal in the mouth (e.g. piercings, braces, retainers, or other orthodontic appliance)
  • Seizure disorders
  • Epilepsy
